The periodontics is a specialty in dentistry that dedicates in the cure of hard and soft tissues around the teeth. Periodontics has experienced great advancements against the periodontal disease (pyorrhea) so it is possible to maintain the teeth and reduce the need to place dental implants afterwards. Periodontics is divided in three well-differentiated phases: hygienic phase, treatment phase and maintenance phase. In the first phase we remove the plaque that is accumulated on the teeth and below the gum that causes inflammation and loss of hard and soft tissues. Once this is done we wait to observe an improvement of the gums. If a time has passed and we see a worsening of the bone and gums, then we enter in the treatment phase where we have to treat locally these defects. After performing the treatment phase it’s very important to establish maintenance phases to maintain a healthy state of the gums. The maintenance phases are done each 6-12 months according of the necessities of each patient.
Moreover the periodontics is in charge to treat the defects that can exist in the gums. Sometimes because of the orthodontics or the way we brush our teeth we can create defects in the gums that can provoke sensibility problems. These defects can be solved with grafting techniques of gum of the own patient.
